A mental disorder is a condition that is described as a clinically significant behavioural or psychological syndrome. They are characterized by Symptoms that are distressing and Impairment to the functioning of one or more important areas of the brain.

Common mental disorders include:

Mood disorders, for example, major depression and bipolar disorder.

Schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. Anxiety disorders Cognitive disorders, for example, delirium and dementia Substance-related disorders

The hospital may be contacted via telephone (928-1380-9), website or e-mail. The community mental health team may be contacted based on the Regional Health Authority which covers your area.

The Emergency / Admission Room is open daily from 8:00 am – 10:00 pm. Outside of these hours, emergencies may be seen at the Kingston Public Hospital.

The visiting hours to the wards are from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm and 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm daily.

Yes. A client may be referred from another hospital, clinic or private doctor.

Yes. All donations, monetary and otherwise, must be directed to the Office of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

Yes. Family Support group meetings are held on the fourth Saturday of each month.

Commonly used drugs include:

Haloperidol (Haldol), Trifluoperazine (Stelazine), Chlorpromazine (Largactil / CPZ), Benztropine (Cogentin), Trihexyphenidyl (Artane)

Risperidone (Risperdal), Quetiapine (Seroquel), Lithium Carbonate (Li2CO3), and Valproic Acid (Depakene)

1) Acute, the target outcome for stabilization, and
2) Sub-acute, the outcome for which is maintenance

Treatment aims to:

  • improve functioning
  • prevent relapse
  • enhance the family and society’s ability to cope
  •  reduce caregiver strain

A client’s stay is determined by their diagnosis, progress and functioning level, but admission stays could span between two and six weeks on average.

No. Bellevue adheres to the free user fee policy implemented by the Government of Jamaica.

Routine blood work is done for all admissions; however, some tests must be paid for by relatives, such as Thyroid Function and Lithium level tests.

Yes. This is an involuntary admission, and the doctor has a right to do this if he/she deems the patient to be a danger to him/herself or others.

 Yes. Some mental illnesses are hereditary/familial and may be manifested or exacerbated by substance abuse or stress.

Our services include psychiatry, general and psychiatric nursing care, pharmaceutical, nutritional, social, dental, psychological and rehabilitative services.

YES! The nurses at Bellevue are Registered Psychiatric Nurses and trained Enrolled Assistant Nurses, levels 1 and 2.

Yes. The client should be at least 18 to be admitted to the facility. There is no upper age limit.
